Faculty of Medicine – University of Pécs

The Faculty has been devoted to achieve a substantial scientific development in the field of biology and medicine since its foundation, more than half a century ago. It enjoys wide international recognition and it offers high-quality education at degree level in General Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. It is also possible to deepen your knowledge until you achieve a PhD level in Clinical Theory and Multidisciplinary Medical Science.

This is the slogan of the Faculty of Medicine, one of the excellent faculties to win the award “Centre of Excellence” in 2006.

Since 1985, students from all over the world have graduated in the programme in English, and have enjoyed recognition and prestige ever since. In response to the growing demand, the Faculty began in 2005 a study programme in German, followed by a Dentistry programme in English. Since 2006, the programme has also been offered in German.

The institution trains general practitioners, dentists and pharmacists. The Faculty continues to develop thanks to complex teaching, research and medical treatment, and it works in close cooperation with the Clinical Centre and the Faculty of Health Sciences. 25 clinics, 23 theoretical institutes and over 500 physicians, research workers and scientists participate in teaching.
The Faculty’s library holds thousands of publications and books, as well as access to a number of online databases. Accredited exams in foreign languages for medical specialists, developed by the staff of the School, can also be taken here. The School’s central building and its Rohmányi György Assembly Hall can accommodate an audience of 800. It is a popular venue for special exhibitions and artistic events. The student newspaper “Confabula” and the choir “Vox Medicata”, which occasionally performs abroad, offer the students an opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities. The Pécs section of the Hungarian Association of Medical Students organises preventive programmes which enjoy national recognition, such as the Teddy Bear Hospital for children.

Ever since the foundation of the Pécs University Medical School, international recognition of the Faculty has increased through cooperation with a variety of institutions all over the world.
The international programme was launched in 1984 with 36 students coming from 12 countries. Nowadays, the international student community has considerably increased, particularly. The international student community has considerably expanded during the last few years, particularly with students coming from Israel and Scandinavia, and, above all, from Spain.

The study programme in Medicine lasts for 6 years. At the end, you will be awarded the degree of Dr. in Medicine. The first two years are devoted to the general study of Medicine, followed by three years of clinical studies and one last year of interdisciplinary rotations.

The entire degree is taught in English.

All learning material is in English, and the lectures and exams are held in English as well. As the University itself has declared, you only need to attain a minimum level of Hungarian in order to do the hospital internships in the last years. The students will have one hour of Hungarian lessons a week. The subject is optional for all students.

The Faculty has confirmed that the level of Hungarian of a student does not affect completion of studies. The candidate to the degree in Medicine has to pass an admission test in biology, chemistry and English.
