The present University of Pécs was founded on the 1st of January 2000, with the merging of the Pannonius University, the Medical University of Pécs and the Educational School Professor Gyula in Szekszárd. However, the beginnings of the University go back to the year 1367, as the Hungarian king Louis the Great founded the first Hungarian university in Pécs.
With its ten faculties – Faculty for Adult Education and Development of Human Resources, Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, Faculty of Illyés Gyula, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Music and Visual Arts, Faculty of Science, and Faculty Pollack Mihály of Engineering and Information Technology, the University of Pécs plays a significant role in Hungary’s higher education. The University offers a wide range of educational programmes and degrees, ensuring a high level in acquired knowledge and elevated research standards. With more than 29,000 students and with more than 2,000 professors and research support staff, the impact of the University in Pécs goes well beyond the borders of the city.
The modern system of higher education, set in motion by the European Union, was introduced in Hungary in September 2006 and it is known as the “Bologna Process”. This programme offers students the opportunity to develop their studies in a dynamic manner, adjusting to the European system of higher education.
The traditional system that the study programmes had at this University and its faculties was soon replaced by a three-level system consisting in a Basic Education Programme, a Master’s Programme and a PhD Programme.
With the intention of meeting the educational demands and needs of a society in continuous development, the University of Pécs began to enhance its programmes of Permanent Education. In addition, the University gives great importance to education in the faculties of Advanced Studies. The majority of the faculties offer education according to the mentioned division, which encourages students to do research on their own.
Thanks to the credit system, introduced for the first time at Pécs, the number of students who participate in international study programmes as an integral part of their education has increased considerably. The number of international students and researchers who come to Pécs to study or research has also increased. Therefore, the University continues working on expanding and developing its cooperation with other international universities and institutions. Together they form an important network which functions on different levels.
