Semmelweis University Graduation Ceremony 2016

Universidad de Semmelweis celebra la ceremonia de graduación

Recently, the 246th Graduation Ceremony of the Faculty of Medicine of the Semmelweis University took place. 320 Hungarians and 157 international students got their “Doctor of Medicine”-degree awarded by Dr. Ferenc Bánhidy, Vice-Rector for General Affairs, and Dr. László Hunyady, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

In his speech, Bánhidy addressed the freshly graduated doctors, that they should always stick loyal to their oath that they have taken:  care for and heal patients, accomplish all of a doctor’s responsibilities, to do their professional duty with the utmost conscientiousness and to maintain their theoretical and practical knowledge at a high level.

Commemorating Ignác Semmelweis, name giver of the university, Dean Hunyady pointed out that medical studies are not completed with the degree. One of the most important goals of the university is to prepare students for lifelong learning. According to him, one should not stop learning and growing personally, because it is not possible to meet the requirements of the growing challenges in patient care without modern and constantly updated knowledge. He emphasized that – besides the professional knowledge – empathy is one of the core competencies of being a doctor: “You are all starting a new journey, and if you work hard and believe in yourselves, it will bring you a lot of joy.”, said Dean Hunyady.

After their speeches, Dr. Máté Jancsó addressed the audience on behalf of the graduating students: “During our medical studies we have learnt how to work in a team, while also concentrating on our own goals in the meantime. According to many people, the most difficult part is still ahead of us. We have many reasons to be excited, but there is no need to be afraid. The six years at this university have prepared us to be successful in solving unexpected situations by always considering the patients’ interests instead of waiting for the ready-made solutions.”

Generally speaking, Hunyady pointed to the internationality of the Semmelweis University: “It is an indicator of success that there are several international medical students studying at the Semmelweis University. 48% of the 4,169 medical students studying at the Faculty of Medicine participate in the English- or German-language programs. Besides knowledge, students receive the tradition of almost two and a half centuries as a parting gift, of which every student will be a successor.”, said Dean Hunyady in his speech.
